Where is the Magaliesberg Canopy Tour?

The Magaliesberg Canopy Tour is situated in the Ysterhout Kloof, within the spectacular Magaliesberg Mountain range, a mere 1,5 hours drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria. The tour departs from offices situated at the Sparkling Waters Hotel and Spa.

Where did the idea originate?

Canopy tours originated in the lush rainforests of Costa Rica, where adventurous biologists erected a system of cables through the canopy layer of the forest in order to observe the fauna and flora in that previously inaccessible region. The Magaliesberg Canopy tour was number three to be constructed under the Canopy Tours SA® banner and by the end of 2009 there will be six Canopy Tours in all.

Why a canopy tour in the Magaliesberg?

At 2400 million years of age the Magaliesberg mountains are the second oldest in the world. The Magaliesberg Canopy tour offers participants the opportunity to explore the beauty and splendor of the range from a bird's eye view without the risk of disturbing or damaging its unique and sensitive eco system.

What is the Magaliesberg Canopy Tour?

It is a unique and unforgettable 2½ hour experience through the Ysterhout Kloof. Slide above the kloof from eleven platforms built high against the cliffs and rock faces of the kloof and joined by ten slides up to 140m long and in some places up to 30m above the stream below.

Is it safe?

The system has been designed and constructed by a civil engineer. During the tour two trained guides assure the safety of each group while describing interesting facts about the history of the range, surrounding ecology, bird and animal life.

Who can go on the Canopy Tour?

If you're aged between seven and seventy and looking for something different, this is just the experience you've been looking for. It's fun, it's safe and will be the talking point at your breakfast table for weeks afterwards.

Exception: For their own safety, pregnant women may not participate in the Canopy Tour.

The Magaliesberg Canopy Tour is ideal for the individual thrill seeker, family getaways, group or student excursions and Corporate Team Builds.

How does it work?

The experience begins with a briefing session at the Magaliesberg Canopy Tour offices where you will be tutored on the do's and don'ts during the tour. You will also be kitted out with your harness, safety helmet and sliding glove and will be given an opportunity to ask questions to your guide. Tour parties are restricted to a maximum of eight persons in order to ensure maximum enjoyment by all participants.

After the briefing session you will be transported up the mountain over a distance of two kilometres to the first platform. This is where your unforgettable, unmatchable adventure begins - enjoy the ride!

What if you get thirsty?

Refreshments are served during the canopy tour and the same vehicle will be ready to pick you up as you exit from the last platform.

Now you've built up a good appetite!

Once you are back at the Magaliesberg Canopy Tour offices you can place your meal order at the Hadeda Restauarant and Bar adjacent to the office before freshening up.
